Inaugural Gill BVI Match Racing Championships Racing Action Starts This Week
Gill welcomes Match Racers to the inaugural 2011 Gill BVI International Match Race Championships to be held on March 30-31, 2011 at Nanny Cay, Tortoal BVI. This is a grade 3 event and targeted at the rising match racing stars who are seeking to gain points and raise their game. The winner of the Gill grade 3 event will have an automatic feed into a prestigious level 2 event. The Gill BVI Match Racing two day round robin series will provide aspiring match racers a way to bootstrap their way up through the rankings.
Match racing is one of the most intense forms of sailing and is gaining an increasing number of enthusiasts in the World Match Racing Tour. Recently, the International Olympic Committee added match racing as a new Women’s discipline in the Olympic Games. The short courses, identical boats, umpired rules, and one-on-one format all of which make this form of the match truly electrifying and ideal for spectators to follow all the action.
Mary Anne Ward, Event Director said: “This two day event will be thrilling for both the sailors and spectators. With fantastic prizes from Gill and the opportunity to race in the Chicago Match Race Center's Grade 2 event later this year, there is a lot on the line for these teams”.
