Baselayer - Next to skin
Often considered as a piece to keep you warm, its true function in a layering system is to be sure the skin's surface is dry. Base layer is essential for not only staying warm in cold conditions, but is as important for staying cool on a hot day especially while wearing mid layer and waterproof breathable outer garments
Frequently overlooked, the base layer can be a night and day changing experience if you have been wearing a cotton tee shirt or jeans under your foul weather gear. When your skin is dry you will be warmer in cold weather than if damp cotton clothing is against the skin and on a hot day you will be cooler. Base layer leggings are not to be overlooked as a part of the system.
Tips: Do not wash polyester base layer in fabric softener.

The important things to remember are
1) Never wear cotton, particularly next to the skin.
2) The base layer is the wicking layer
3) The mid layer is insulating and should be
adjusted accordingly
4) The outer layer is the weather protection layer.
