What to look for in a trainer
Not only do we look for the general qualities such as experience, qualifications, personality and the like but since we are talking about the sailing industry, what does the trainer know about the boats that the athletes are sailing and does the trainer know how to format a routine, custom fitting it to each requirement?
Initially you may notice that the trainer is certified in this method or that such as NASM, NSPA, NCSA and many others that are all high quality. Some trainers and coaches have a college degree in sports therapy and psychology yet if you don’t hit it off with the trainer or you find that he/she isn’t giving you the appropriate attention, then all of the certifications mean zilch!
Look for a trainer that has experience with many styles and knows how to integrate. Variety is key. There are no absolutes in routines apart from safety and technique considerations.
One of the best ways to judge a trainer is to do a complimentary one to one or join a team workout. Talk to the trainers clients and get feedback. Internet training has become very popular and can assist in accountability and guidance... Make sure that your agreement is clear regarding your plan of action with periodization and all financial requirements. A workout routine is ideally switched up every 3-5 weeks…
